How can I use Sparks and how does it work?

You can use Sparks in ProWritingAid integrations and apps. Once you have opened Sparks, you can also choose between two main categories. Sparks Edit gives you instant examples of how to edit and improve your writing. Sparks Inspire gives you new suggestions to push your story forward.

How do I get Sparks working in ProWritingAid?

Sparks works across our integrations and apps:

  • Online Web Editor
  • ProWritingAid Desktop Everywhere for Mac
  • ProWritingAid Desktop Everywhere for Windows
  • Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge web extensions
  • Desktop Editor for Mac and Windows

Sparks is switched on by default when using ProWritingAid.

To make sure Sparks is switched on in the Web Editor, click on the “Menu” button above the toolbar. We have highlighted this button in red in the image below.

In the drop-down menu, click on the toggle next to “Show Sparks Toolbar.” We have highlighted this in red in the image below.

How to select between the two main categories for Sparks

Highlight at least one sentence of your text and the “Sparks” button will appear. We have highlighted this button in red in the image below.

Click on the “Sparks” button, and the Sparks menu will appear. To use Sparks Edit, click on any of the options listed under “EDIT.” We have highlighted this menu in red in the image below.

To use Sparks Inspire, click on any of the options listed under “INSPIRE.” We have highlighted this menu in red in the image below.

What happens when I click on a Sparks option?

When you click on a Sparks option under either the Sparks Edit or Sparks Inspire category, Sparks will give you an example or suggestion.

To help you see how Sparks Edit works, we have clicked on “Readability” in the image below.

If you want to use a suggestion, click “Replace” and your text will be updated automatically. If you want a different example, click “Try Again” instead. Each time you click “Try Again,” this counts as one use of Sparks toward your daily Sparks allowance.

If you only want to use some parts of the suggestion, click on “Copy.” You can paste the text into your document manually, then edit it further yourself.

To help you see how Sparks Inspire works, we have clicked on “Action” in the image below.

If you like the suggestion, click on “Copy.” You can then paste the text into your document manually, wherever you choose. You can also edit the suggestion further, as you are always in total control of anything you add to your writing using Sparks Inspire.

If you want a different example, click “Try Again” instead. Each time you click “Try Again,” this counts as one use of Sparks toward your daily Sparks allowance.
