Does ProWritingAid use AI?

Does ProWritingAid use AI?

ProWritingAid is a suite of tools for creative writing that does three main things:

  1. Provides you with actionable advice to craft, polish, and elevate your writing by giving you information about your writing that you might otherwise not find
  2. Help you implement changes to your writing by suggesting different ways to improve the style and readability, as well as grammar and spelling mistakes.
  3. Offers you inspiration by providing you with different ways of rewriting, summarizing, or expanding your writing in different styles

While ProWritingAid uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to do all of that, the AI used for most reports and features (excluding Rephrase, Sparks, Critique Report, and Inspiration Report) simply processes and analyzes your documents to provide suggestions on how to improve your writing. ProWritingAid only uses generative AI on our Sparks, Rephrase, Critique Report and Inspiration Report features, all of which can be turned off.

For example, our Sticky Sentence Report will give you information about sticky sentence usage in your writing. It will tell you where in your documents you have used sticky sentences. This is something that would be incredibly difficult for you to do manually on your own. ProWritingAid will then suggest different options to rewrite those sticky sentences, using Rephrase or Sparks, two of our generative AI features.

If you don't want to use generative AI, you don’t have to. You can just use our reports to improve your writing.

There’s still a huge amount of value with our reports as they help give you information that would otherwise be really difficult to find yourself, like repeated words.

ProWritingAid will not change your text directly unless you accept the suggestions. If you would prefer, you don’t have to press the Accept button at all. You can just use the information you gain from our reports to know what you need to focus on to improve your text.

How does Sparks use generative AI?

Sparks is a set of extended AI features that not only help with editing and enhancing longer text but also provide instant ideas for brainstorming and all kinds of creative experimenting, both for editing and continuing writing.

When you use Sparks, it creates AI-generated text suggestions you can use to improve or continue your writing. You have the option to copy and paste the suggestion into your writing, or you can use the suggestions to get inspired.

If you don’t wish to use Sparks, you can turn the feature off.

How does the Critique Report use generative AI?

Critique Report is an AI-powered tool that offers on-demand developmental critique to writers. It analyzes your text using AI that we have trained to give critiques as a developmental editor would.

One of the key benefits of using an AI-powered critique generator is that you can see how well your writing is coming along before you reach out to beta readers and editors. It can reduce the time to polish your writing before you move on to beta readers or editing with a professional editor.

Does ProWritingAid train AI models using my documents?

ProWritingAid never uses your work or your writing to train our AI models or algorithms.

You can read our Privacy Policy and our Trust Center for more information.

Who owns the text generated by ProWritingAid’s AI?

ProWritingAid never shares or resells your works. You own the rights to your writing. ProWritingAid does not have any rights to any content created by you.

You can read our Privacy Policy and our Trust Center for more information.

If you use ProWritingAid’s generative AI tools to change your works, we don’t claim ownership of the result. You’ll own the rights to that content, unless someone else has previously created it.

To prevent this from happening, you can run Plagiarism Checks on your writing. However, we cannot guarantee that it will flag every instance of plagiarism.

Will AI detectors flag my writing?

AI detectors should not flag your writing unless you include text generated by any of the generative AI features available, such as Rephrase, Sparks, and Inspiration Report.

Despite this, some AI detectors, such as Turnitin, may flag writing edited with ProWritingAid, even if you didn't use any generative AI features. AI detectors aren’t infallible, and many acknowledge that they can return false positives, even when a human wrote the text.

ProWritingAid will not change your text directly, unless you accept the suggestions. If you would prefer, you don’t have to press the Accept button at all. You can then change your document manually.

What if my publisher asks whether I have used AI in my writing?

It’s good to check with your publisher about whether they would accept AI-assisted or AI-generated text in your writing before you use the Rephrase, Sparks, and the Inspiration Report.

It’s up to you to verify your content adheres to all content guidelines for the publisher you want to submit your work to.

Each publishing platform will have different requirements for disclosing the use of AI-powered writing aids or the inclusion of AI-generated or AI-assisted content.

Most ProWritingAid features help you edit your writing; they don’t generate content. You can generate new text using Rephrase, Sparks, or the Inspiration Report, but you will need to write some content yourself before the features can generate new text.

These features generate content you could use in your documents. You can use Rephrase, Sparks, and the Inspiration Report to spark your imagination and generate ideas on how to continue your writing. You don’t need to use the text generated in your writing if you don’t want to.

Is using ProWritingAid against the rules of literary contests, universities, and colleges?

We’re not able to advise on the specific AI usage rules set by literary contests, universities, or colleges.

If you’re unsure if ProWritingAid may be in breach of any policies set by the institution you wish to submit your work to, check directly with the institution. There may be clear guidelines for the use of AI, including the full disclosure of any use of AI-powered writing aids.
