Is ProWritingAid designed to replace human editors?

We believe in the craft of storytelling. Neither ProWritingAid nor any of its features are designed to replace human authors, editors, or beta readers.

Our tools help you craft, polish, and elevate your writing by giving you information about your writing that you might otherwise not find, as well as giving you inspiration by providing you with different ways of brainstorming, rewriting, summarizing, or expanding your writing in different styles.

You have control over which features to use, and you decide when in your editing process to use them.

Even if you’re comfortable using ProWritingAid throughout your entire editing process, we recommend that you work with human editors or beta readers that can spot things or feel emotions that technology can’t.

Using ProWritingAid, however, can help you save time and money on your editing process, and it can facilitate the work of the human editors or beta readers that edit or review your work.

Get feedback on your writing with Critique Report

Our Critique Report generates immediate feedback on the quality of your writing for individual chapters, so you can save time in refining your writing before reaching out to beta readers and editors.

Below are three ways you can make the most of the Critique Report before you share your writing with your editor or beta readers:

Keep on track

When you’re drafting, you can use the Critique Report to make sure you’re achieving your writing goals in each chapter. If you’ve got a scene or chapter plan, you can run the Critique Report to check that what you’ve written matches with your plans.

Run a Critique Report for each chapter as you write them to build a foundation for your first round of edits after the manuscript is finished. You will be able to review all the reports later in your Feedback History. It’s satisfying to see the progress you’re making throughout the story.

Developmental editing suggestions

Most writers who have completed their first drafts start editing by focusing on developmental edits, which means focusing on plot, characters, setting, pacing, point of view, and more. The Critique Report can provide quick feedback on these elements before you let anyone else read your draft.

By using the Critique Report, you can start the editing process with a sense of direction. If you’re a first-time writer, this is crucial to ensure you don’t get lost in the sea of potential changes you could make. Working one chapter at a time, you can really drill down on your edits and produce amazing writing.

Validate your writing

If you’re suffering from impostor syndrome, or your editor on your shoulder is telling you your writing isn’t good enough, you can get instant feedback on your writing with the Critique Report. It will help you validate what you’re doing well, but it will also provide you with some pointers for improving your text.

Doing so will give you immediate reassurance without having to share the story with anyone else (yet).
