How to use the text location function
Text location is a new function we have introduced within Manuscript Analysis and Chapter Critique. It shows you the exact locations in your text of the suggestions these reports may make. You can also jump to the locations in your text directly from the reports.
How to access and use text location
First, if you want to use text location within Manuscript Analysis, prepare your manuscript as a single document before you run the report. This will help you get the best results. You can also read our guide to preparing your manuscript for Manuscript Analysis.
Next, run Manuscript Analysis or Chapter Critique.
As it is a new function, text location is currently not available in our browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It is also not available yet when you use Desktop Everywhere for Windows in Scrivenings mode in Scrivener.
The report will generate. Click on each heading to read specific feedback on the key elements of storytelling in your manuscript.
If you ran Manuscript Analysis, click on areas labeled as “Minor concern” in yellow, “Concern” in orange, or “Major concern” in red.
How to jump to each text location in your manuscript
Under the section titled “Where in your text,” you will see the new text location function. It contains a list of one or more buttons with a map pinpoint icon and part of the first sentence of the text location. Click on each button to jump to the exact text location in your manuscript. We have highlighted an example of these buttons in red in the image below.

How to see text locations highlighted in your manuscript
When you click on a text location button, the report will minimize to the sidebar. You will jump to the text location, and it will be highlighted in your manuscript.
Why is a text location button no longer available?
If you edit or delete text that previously had a text location button, it will no longer be available. If you hover over the button, you will see the message “Location not found. It may have changed or been removed.” We have highlighted this message in red in the image below.

Why is the “Where in your text” section no longer available?
If you open a different document when Manuscript Analysis or Chapter Critique is still open in your sidebar, the “Where in your text” section will no longer be available. This is because this specific report only applies to the document you originally ran it on. We have shown an example of this in the image below.

If the “Where in your text” section is not available, this means the text location function will not be available too. If you want to see text location in the new document you opened, you will need to run Manuscript Analysis or Chapter Critique again.
Can I access text location on previous Chapter Critique or Manuscript Analysis reports?
No, text location cannot be applied to reports you ran before the function was launched. If you want to see text location in the reports for these chapters or manuscripts, you will need to run the reports again.
