How do I use Character Analysis?
Character Analysis is a report that helps you understand and improve the development of the characters in your story. It evaluates your cast of characters, generates relationship maps, and shows you character arcs and motivations.
Purchase Story Credits to run Character Analysis
When you first sign up for a ProWritingAid account, we will give you 1 trial credit to run Character Analysis. After this, you will need to purchase Story Credits directly on our website to run Manuscript Analysis. It costs 1 Story Credit to run Manuscript Analysis once.
You can buy individual credits or bundles of 3 or 10 credits. You don’t need a Premium or Premium Pro subscription to purchase credits. However, if you have Premium or Premium Pro, you will receive a discount that will be automatically applied when you purchase credits.
How to run Character Analysis

In the Web Editor, Desktop Everywhere, or our browser extensions, click on the “Edit” tab in the righthand sidebar. Then click on "Critique" in the menu that appears within the sidebar. We have highlighted these buttons in red in the image below.

Under "Story Critique", click on "Character Analysis." We have highlighted this button in red in the image below.

Finally, click on the “Run Character Analysis” button and the report will run. It costs 1 Story Credit to run Plot Analysis once.

The analysis will take a few minutes to run, depending on the total word count of your manuscript.
You will see a notification with the approximate waiting time for your results. In the meantime, you can keep using any other feature as normal.
When the analysis is ready, you will be notified that the report is ready to review. It will appear in the "Feedback history" section where the Manuscript Analysis Report will be automatically saved. We have highlighted this section in red in the image below.

How to use the feedback in Character Analysis
The report analyzes your characters and outlines the characterization present in your story according to the following sections:
- Report Overview
- Cast
- Relationships Map
- Character Card (with the name of each character)
- Core Psychology
- Character Arc
- Agency Map
- Summary
- Revision Focus
It also shows possible revisions to characters in your story with color coding as:
- Green: No issues found
- Yellow: Minor concerns
- Orange: Concerns
- Red: Major concerns
How to view your Character Analysis report later
You can view your Character Analysis report again at any time. To do this, click on the "Edit" tab, then “Critique,” then scroll down to “Feedback History.” Click on “View previous feedback” to see all instances where you previously ran Character Analysis. We have highlighted this in red in the image below.

How to print or download Character Analysis
Character Analysis has a lot of detail, including relationship maps and character arcs. If you’d like to continue with your writing and save your analysis to look at later, you can print or download it instead.
To do this, click on the “Print” icon button at the top of the analysis. We have highlighted this button in red in the image below.

From here, you can either print the document or select “Save as PDF” in the drop-down menu under “Printer.” Then click the “Save” button to download the .pdf file to your computer.
