How to switch from Single Document mode to Scrivenings mode in Scrivener

Scrivener allows you to switch between two different modes for viewing your writing:

  • Single Document mode only shows the section or chapter you have selected in the Binder (side menu). Only this section will appear as visible text in the main Editor window.
  • Scrivenings mode shows all sections or chapters as one continuous manuscript. This full manuscript will appear as visible text in the main Editor window.

Why Scrivenings mode is useful for ProWritingAid feedback

Scrivenings mode makes your full manuscript appear as visible text in the main Editor window. This means you can run ProWritingAid’s Manuscript Analysis and Virtual Beta Reader on your full manuscript instead of just one section or chapter.

How to switch from Single Document mode to Scrivenings mode

Open your “Draft” or “Manuscript” folder. Then click on the Scrivenings button, which is positioned to the right of your selected section title in the toolbar. We have circled the Scrivenings button in red with an arrow pointing toward it in the image below:

How to check if you are in Scrivenings mode

If you’re unsure which mode you have enabled, there are several ways you can check. If you are in Scrivenings mode:

  • The Scrivenings button will show an icon with two documents. You can click on this if you want to switch to Single Document mode.
  • The name under the toolbar will show the full name of the folder and the section where your cursor is placed.
  • Dashed lines will show whenever you scroll between two different sections of your manuscript.

How to switch back to Single Document mode

Click on the Scrivenings button again, which is positioned to the right of your selected section title in the toolbar. We have highlighted the Scrivenings button in red with an arrow pointing toward it in the image below:
