Why have I been charged if my card has expired?

All ProWritingAid monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically. This means automatic payments may continue even if your debit or credit card has expired.

There are different reasons why your card may still be charged even if it has expired.

Your bank or card issuer allowed the payment

Some banks and card issuers allow payments using expired cards. This is also more likely when the expired card receives a payment request from a recurring subscription. Banks do this to avoid disruption to your service.

Your bank issued a new card for the same account

Some banks and card issuers automatically provide your new card details for payment requests from a recurring subscription. This is to avoid disruption to your service. The subscription is paid for with the new card details, instead of the expired card.

You have several payment methods in your account

If you purchased your subscription with PayPal and have several payment methods in your PayPal account, you can still be charged for your renewed subscription even if a card has expired. This is especially the case if you have a different card set as your preferred payment method in PayPal. The payment for your subscription will be taken from a different card, instead of the expired card.

You also have the following options for your subscription if your card has expired:

To continue your ProWritingAid subscription, simply update your payment method in your account. To follow the steps to do this, read our article about updating your payment details.

If you do not want to continue your ProWritingAid subscription, you can request a refund if your payment was made within 3 days of purchase and qualifies for our Money-Back Guarantee. Otherwise, you can find out how to cancel your subscription so it ends by your next billing period.

If you do not want to continue your monthly or yearly subscription, you need to cancel your subscription. If you do not cancel, your expired debit or credit card may still be automatically charged when your subscription renews.
