How to use Creative Nudges

Creative Nudges give you a series of ideas for expanding, reshaping, and redefining your story. You can use the Creative Nudges Report to help you if you’re stuck or struggling with writer’s block.

How to access Creative Nudges

If you’re using the Web Editor, click on the “Write” mode tab in the right-hand side panel. If you’re using Desktop Everywhere, click on the floating ProWritingAid icon, then click on the “Write” mode tab. Next, click on “Creative Nudges.” We have highlighted both of these buttons in red in the image below.

The Creative Nudges window will appear. At the top of the window, you can watch a short narrated video about how to use Creative Nudges.

You can also click on the “View sample report” to see a preview of the type of nudges you can expect, based on a sample manuscript. This is especially helpful if you have not used Creative Nudges before and want to see the report without it counting toward your one report per day limit.

You will also see some information about the number of nudges you will get in your report:

  • If you have the Free plan, you will get 3 nudges per day, with 1 nudge in each category.
  • If you have the Premium plan, you will get 9 nudges per day, with 3 nudges in each category.
  • If you have the Premium Pro plan, you will get 15 nudges per day, with 5 nudges in each category.

This limit will reset at 00:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) each day. Find out more about when our daily limits reset.

The report works best on manuscripts of 10,000 to 30,000 words, but you can still get helpful ideas if you have written at least 500 words.

How to run the Creative Nudges report

Click on the “Get unstuck” button at the end of the window. We have highlighted this button in red in the image below.

The report will run. Depending on how many words you have written, the report may take up to 1 to 2 minutes to generate.

How to use the Creative Nudges report

Once the report has generated, you can click on the “Expand” icon to see the report in a larger window. We have highlighted this icon in red in the image below.

First, the report gives you a summary of your current progress in the “Where you are right now” section. This also lists “What’s working well” in your story. We have shown an example of this section in the image below.

You can then view the nudges in the “Get things moving” section. This gives you ideas to progress and expand your story. To condense the report and make it easier to read, at first you will only see the “Idea” for a nudge. Click on “Show more” to see the nudge in full detail, which includes “Things to consider” and “What this introduces.” We have shown an example of a nudge in this section in the image below.

Next, you can view the nudges in the “Next beat nudges” section. This helps you consider your current story structure and think about the story beats that will follow. We have shown an example of a nudge in this section in the image below.

Finally, you can view the nudges in the “Big picture thinking” section. This gives you suggestions for taking your story in different directions with a “What-if scenario” instead of an “Idea.” We have shown an example of a nudge in this section in the image below.

How to view your Creative Nudges Reports later

You can go back to and view your previous Creative Nudges Reports at any time after they have been generated. To do this, click on “Write” mode, then scroll down to the “Creative Nudges History” section. You can click on each report in this section to view it again.
