What are Creative Nudges?
Creative Nudges give you a series of ideas and things to consider that will help you expand, reshape, and redefine your story. If you are stuck or struggling with writer’s block, Creative Nudges will help by posing questions, as well as providing suggestions and explanations. They are designed to help you get unstuck while keeping you in control of the writing process.
How do Creative Nudges work?
You will find Creative Nudges within “Write” mode. Click on “Creative Nudges,” then click on the black “Get unstuck” button. Creative Nudges will analyze your manuscript and generate a report with ideas for progressing your story.
How long should my manuscript be?
Creative Nudges are specifically designed to help you expand your story beyond the “messy middle.” This is often the most difficult midway point, where it becomes challenging to maintain momentum and cohesion in your story.
For this reason, Creative Nudges work best on manuscripts of 10,000 to 30,000 words. Even if you haven’t reached that point yet, you’ll still get helpful ideas if you’ve written at least 500 words or more.
What type of nudges will I get?
First, the report gives you a summary of your current progress in the “Where you are right now” section. This also lists “What’s working well” in your story.
Then the nudges give you “Ideas” usually posed as questions, “Things to consider” listed as bullet points, and an explanation in “What this introduces.” These nudges are categorized in three sections:
Get things moving
These nudges are ideal to go beyond your current writing. They offer ideas to expand your story when you’re not sure what happens next.
Next beat nudges
These nudges consider your current story structure and look at how you can enhance or refine your story beats and what will follow.
Big picture thinking
These nudges take in a wide-angle overview of your entire story. They give you ideas for taking your story in different directions with a “What-if scenario” for each one.
How many nudges will I get?
This depends on the plan you currently have. All ProWritingAid members can run the Creative Nudges report once per day.
- If you have the Free plan, you will get 3 nudges per day, with 1 nudge in each category.
- If you have the Premium plan, you will get 9 nudges per day, with 3 nudges in each category.
- If you have the Premium Pro plan, you will get 15 nudges per day, with 5 nudges in each category.
