Why is my word count different on ProWritingAid?

Your word count on ProWritingAid might look different from other programs because our algorithm for counting words is different from the algorithms used by other programs.

This simply means we have a different set of rules for how we count words with apostrophes, numbers, hyphens, commas, periods, and other characters.
